Trump Administration Seeks Stricter Rules, Dairy Access From Canada
The U.S. trade representative, Jamieson Greer, has made it clear that any new trade deal with Canada will include permanent tariffs. The Trump administration is demanding stricter rules to prevent other countries (like China) from using Canada as a backdoor to the U.S. market. In exchange for trade access, the U.S. wants Canada to open up its dairy market and remove retaliatory measures. While the Canadian government is trying to stay optimistic and diversify its trade partners, the U.S. is signaling a fundamental shift away from the traditional ‘free trade’ model that has existed since 1994.
